Spark Entrepreneur Awards

Individuals inspire change

The RSA has a long history of fostering and celebrating human ingenuity for the common good.  Chacegrove believes individuals inspire change, so it only made sense to partner with the RSA.

The programme fostered connections, with nearly three-quarters of participants building new relationships across universities and peer networks.

Chacegrove awarded ten initial seed funding grants of £1,000 each to recipients of the RSA Spark entrepreneur awards. 178 students submitted 100 projects for environmental improvement, developing capabilities to thrive in the workforce and the world.

A truly global community

Half of all submissions came from women, 5% from students with a disability, and nearly a third from those who had received financial assistance in education. Participants represented a truly global community, with 45% based outside the UK.

Ten finalists then bid for two additional £10,000 scaling grant to take their idea further. Jonson Cox, sat on the panel for the bid presentations.

Final award: Felix Chen

Felix is a product designer and former student at the Royal College of Art and Imperial College London, has developed BioBrew, a wastewater treatment system designed to tackle pollution at small coffee farms.

“I’m encouraged by the recognition and the chance to turn my project into a real development. People drink coffee every day, but aren’t aware of its environmental impact. Coffee pollution starts on the farm; BioBrew is designed to address that.”

Final award: Casta Schaebbicke

Casta a final-year Industrial Design student at Northumbria University, has created Biotherm, a low-cost home insulation solution using waste cooking oil, paraffin and beeswax.

“This project has always been about tackling a real problem; fuel poverty and cold homes. To have that recognised at this level means a lot for this project but also for projects in the future. This support allows it to move into something tangible that can be tested in real homes.”
